My BOMB (Black-Owned Makeup Brands) Routine

Black History Month is coming to a close, and I wanted to finish it off with a bang by sharing my BOMB (Black-Owned Makeup Brands) Routine!

As a black woman, I think it’s super important to support fellow black women and black-owned beauty brands. They are the ones who are creating makeup products with us in mind. Inclusivity in the beauty industry is extremely important, and I’m tired of brands leaving women of darker complexions as afterthoughts or clearly not having any WOC in the room when creating products geared towards us. I love seeing black-owned makeup brands be leading examples of how to get it right, so I’m all about celebrating and contributing to their continued success.

On that note, here’s my blackity black makeup routine

The main issue that I run into when it comes to finding a good brow pencil, is the shade selection. Brands usually have blonde, warm brown and black. None of those shades work for me. My brows are a cool-toned dark brown, so a warm brown pencil looks odd, and black is entirely too intense. Fenty Beauty has a great shade selection. I was happy find a perfect shade! The color comes out evenly and pigmented. I also love the brush styler, which helps tame my unruly brows.

FENTY BEAUTY | PRO FILT'R INSTANT RETOUCH CONCEALER | SHADE: 400

FB30010_FB1400_alt1.jpg

Technically, this isn't a color corrector, but shade 400 is the perfect shade of orange, which makes it perfect for correcting discolored skin. I do suffer from hyperpigmentation, & use this concealer to color correct my dark spots before applying foundation on days when I want my face to look completely flawless. I use this product on and off. Most days I don’t mind my hyperpigmentation peaking through, but when I do want to cover up those dark spots, I use this concealer. If you are big into color-correcting though, I highly recommend this concealer in shade 400 specifically

UOMA BEAUTY | SAY WHAT?! FOUNDATION | SHADE: BRONZE VENUS T1N

Screen+Shot+2020-03-01+at+7.43.31+PM.jpg

I really like this foundation y'all. Like, I really really like this foundation. Coming from me, that says a lot, because I'm a complete snob when it comes to foundation. I like my foundations to be lightweight, but buildable. I like a skin-like finish; anything too matte is no bueno. Lastly, I need my foundation to last all day. Uoma Beauty's Say What?! Foundation has all of the components that I look for in a foundation. It's lightweight, and provides a skin-like finish without slipping and sliding throughout the day. It does dry down, which helps with longevity, and it comes in sooooo many different shades. I picked up Bronze Venus T1N as my Fall/Winter shade, and T2N as my Spring/Summer shade.

UOMA BEAUTY | STAY WOKE CONCEALER | SHADE: BRONZE VENUS T3 & T2

This concealer reminds me a lot of NARS' Creamy Radiant Concealer. It has a creamy, whipped texture, and very easy to blend. I use Bronze Venus T3 which is about a half a shade lighter than my skin tone, to cover up any blemishes/imperfections, and I use Bronze Venus T2 which is 2 shades lighter than me, to highlight under my eyes. It's a great concealer, with a large shade range. I highly recommend!

BEAUTY BAKERIE | FACE FLOUR BAKING POWDER | SHADE: CASSAVA (YELLOW)

PS_Flour_Yellow_Primary_082018_1_1.progressive.jpg

I spoke about this powder in my previous post, but to reiterate, it's the bomb! I use it to set the concealer under my eyes. It's not too powdery, and it doesn't give me any flash back.

MENTED COSMETICS | SKIN BY MENTED | SHADE: M40

1000x1000_0004_M40_copia_1000x1000.jpg

Skin by Mented is a stick formula that can be used as a foundation, concealer, or contour stick. I'm not a huge fan of stick foundations or concealers, but I love me a good contour stick. This product is creamy, pigmented, and has tons of shades

FENTY BEAUTY  | SUN STALK'R INSTANT WARMTH BRONZER | SHADE: BAJAN GYAL

I loveeee this bronzer a lot. I use it to set my contour and add warmth to my skin. It always has me looking like I just stepped off of a beach. I like to go crazy when it comes to bronzer application. I apply it in the shape of a 3. I start at my temples, go into my cheek bone, and bring it back down to my chin. I also use it to set my nose contour.

MENTED COSMETICS | BLUSH | SHADE: CLAY TOO MUCH

I always go for a peach or dusty rose shade of blush. This one by Mented Cosmetics leans on the dusty rose side, and applies so beautifully. I apply it to the apples of my cheeks after bronzing. I love how easily it brings color back to my face. Note: They also have other shades if you're not into this one lol.

FENTY BEAUTY | KILLAWATT FREESTYLE HIGHLIGHTER DUO | SHADE: GINGER BINGE / MOSCOW MULE

FB30002_FB3003.jpg

I wear this pink highlighter literally every day. I know it sounds extra, but it actually works great as an everyday highlighter. It's subtle, yet beautiful. I dust some on the high points of my cheek, the tip of my nose, and tad on the middle of my forehead. Highlighter is a must for me. Even when I choose not to wear foundation, I usually dab some highlighter of my skin to make my skin glow for the gods lol.

JUVIA’S PLACE | THE NUBIAN PALETTE

Nubian_68a354ee-de63-456a-94a3-0ae5995ced66_1024x1024%402x.jpg

I'm a two eyeshadow girl. I like one shade on my lid, and then on transition shade to make it blend seamlessly into my skin. I don't get too crazy when it comes to eye looks, which is why I really enjoy this palette by Juvia's Place. The colors are pretty neutral, pigmented, and go on with one swipe. Juvia's Place has palettes that are more whimsical if you're super into eyeshadow looks.

THE CRAYON CASE | LINE ME LIQUID EYELINER

line-me-03%402x.jpg

I'm not going to lie, I originally bought this eyeliner for the packaging. I really didn't care how it performed, but I've been pleasantly surprised. It's super pigmented, goes on evenly, and lasts all day. I'm definitely a novice when it comes to liquid liner, but I've has zero troubles making a wing with this one.

FENTY BEAUTY | FLYPENCIL LONGWEAR PENCIL EYELINER | SHADE: BAD BRIDE

FB70024_FB4079.jpg

I always use a white liner to line my bottom water line. It makes my eyes look bigger and brighter. I was ecstatic when Rihanna came out with eyeliners! I've only tried the white liner so far, but I love it! I glides on easily without pulling and tugging, is long-lasting, and it’s super pigmented. It’s has silver glitter specks that make my eyes appear even brighter!

FENTY BEAUTY | FULL FRONTAL VOLUME LIFT & CURL MASCARA

41654.jpg

It elongates my lashes without clumps and flakes, it adds volume and body, it doesn’t smudge, and it doesn’t try out quickly. I mean, what more can you ask for from a mascara? It almost makes me look like I have a few lash extensions in. I honestly, may have to retire Too Faced’s Better than Sex Mascara, because this one has it beat!

THE LIP BAR | LIP GLOSS | SHADE: MINIMALIST

gloss_minimalist_3000x.jpg

I've recently developed a strong liking to the color of my natural lips, so lately I've been reaching for a clear gloss. (I’m boring, I know lol) This clear gloss by Lip Bar is the bomb. I like it because it's not super sticky, and gives my lips a nice sheen. Lip Bar also has tons of glosses and lip sticks if you do prefer color.
