10 Black-Owned Fragrance Brands to Try
I’ve always loved fragrances, but I’ve been a body spray girl for most of my life; perfumes were a bit daunting to me. I recently started dibbling and dabbling in perfumes over the past few months, and I’m already starting to build quite the collection. I always want to make sure I’m supporting black-owned brands, and fragrances are no different.
Here are a 10 black-owned fragrance brands you should check out!
Brown Girl Jane is a United States brand founded by Malaika Jones. It originally started as a wellness brand, specializing in CBD-infused products. Brown Girl Jane recently expanded their product live to include 3 fragrances. From my experience with one of the fragrances, Bahia, their fragrance line really caters to women who prefer lighter scents, and don’t like fragrances that are too loud. If that’s you, I would recommend checking them out. I also love Brown Girl Jane because they donate a portion of their sales to non-profits that focus on improving the lives of women of color.
Maya Njie founded her self-named fragrance brand in 2016 with scents that are deeply rooted in Maya's Swedish and West African culture. All Maya Njie fragrances are vegan and cruelty-free. Maya Njie also places a high importance on sustainability and the environment. The brand helps fund projects that support the planting of trees and offset our carbon footprint.
Savoir Faire was founded in 2017 by artist Chris Classic. Savoir Faire has parfums, candles, room sprays, and body butters. The brand prides itself on offering fragrances made for everyone no matter your race or gender. I’m a huge fan of unisex fragrances, so I’m completely here for this brand!
The Elemental Fragrance Company was founded by perfume curator, Luc Solomon. His goal was to create fragrances for men and women to expose their passionate sides. The brand has a large product line that includes a variety of fragrances and candles.
The parent company of Genre Parfums was established in 2013 in Louisiana. I love this brand because it values high quality ingredients at an affordable cost to allow people the opportunity to wear luxury fragrances. They also have “our version of” perfumes, which are affordable dupes of popular high end fragrances. I have Black Cherry, which is a dupe for Tom Ford’s Lost Cherry, and all I’m going to say is…get this fragrance now if you’re a fan of Lost Cherry.
The Nick Ricardo Collection was founded by Nick Yeast. The brand’s mission is focused on breaking gender barriers with a product line of gender-neutral fragrances. The brand also donates a portion of sales to the Transgender, Gender Variant, Intersex Justice Project’s (TGIJP) organization to end the human rights abuse committed against transgender people.
Mysa Fragrance Haus is a newly founded company based in Philadelphia, PA. It was founded by Brie, a licensed esthetician. It is a small, handcrafted fragrance boutique with a promise to deliver fragrances that spark memories. Mysa Fragrance house has body products in addition to spray perfumes and perfume oils. I love Mysa’s perfume oils because they’re perfect for travel.
Chris Collins, who was a cologne connoisseur since he was a kid, founded his own fragrance brand. The first edition was created in 2017, and the latest edition was created in 2021. Chris took a trip to Grasse, France, the birthplace of fragrance, to learn the process of creating fragrances. His fragrances are inspired by stories, memories, places, music, art and love.
Therapeutate Parfums was founded by Rodney Hughes in 2017. It is a New York-based 100% botanical fragrance line. The brand prides itself on offering high quality fragrances that are made up of ingredients that are grown in nature and harvested from the earth, are vegan and cruelty free.
Kimberly Walker, inspired by the lack of diversity in the fragrance field, founded Kimberly New York in 2016. She worked as a department store luxury fragrance sales manager for 10-years, before deciding to create a fragrance brand of her own. Kimberly New York features unique fragrances catered to both women and men.
